Surprise isn't always necessary for a entertaining Solo-Game. While it can be fun (BattleSpace by Robert Salters comes to mind), it sometimes disturb the immersion imho. And Immersion is, to me atleast, the biggest thing in solo-games. Playing booth Gladiators in 'the Games' doubles the fun, random behavior would often been misplaced, i guess. Turf-War is about the story of the whole town for me...not just a particular gang, if it comes to solo-play. Rise (and fall) of different crews is what thrills me in that narrativ. It is even more intense if i play booth sides. And while iam REALLY like campaigns skirmisher, they tend to burn out in my club fast and often(the lads hopping systems like frogs). That was often frustrating. Thanx to Corona for making Sologaming a thing. So, dont overthink 'Solo-Mechanismen' too much...just my 2 cent.

A good perspective.....
I feel that a "story" based (or Narrative) gamer is more open to the solo-wargaming you espouse where the "fun" is in the impact the game to the wider "campaign" world.
